A recent investigation has been opened into the death of Temptations singer Dennis Edwards. This was reported by a spokesperson with the Chicago Police Department. A Cook County spokesperson from the Medical Examiner’s office also reiterated the “manner and cause of death are still pending.”
The 74-year-old Edwards died February 2, one day shy of his 75th birthday because of complications from Meningitis, his widow Brenda said. An emergency protective order had been filed by the Health Care Consortium of Illinois against Brenda Edwards, claiming she abused her husband and according to the order, Mr. Edwards had been immobile and bedbound after a fall in 2017. It also cited that “someone had tried to suffocate him by holding his head face down on the bed.”
The Detroit News reported the protective order said Ms. Edwards was removed from their Chicago home due to medical issues. Ms. Edwards denies the allegations of abuse and recapitulated her love for the legendary artist. She said, ” I love Dennis and we were married 18 years.” She said through her publicist,” the allegations are false and defamatory.” “I have no further comment until this is over with.”
Edward’s daughter, Issa Pointer-Stewart with Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters said: “she and her siblings had been kept away from him and he had left an indelible mark on her life.”
Funeral Services have been set for Dennis Edwards and a public viewing and “Celebration of Life” will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 17 at Faith Miracle Temple, 870 Pershall Road, in St. Louis. The legendary lead singer of the “Temptations” passed away one day before his 75th Birthday. Edwards was born in Fairfield Alabama on Feb 3, 1943, and started singing in his father’s church at the age of 2. When his family moved to Detroit, Michigan he continued to sing in the church his father pastored and eventually became a choir director.
During his teenage years, he joined a Gospel group called”The Mighty Clouds of Joy”; while studying music at the Detroit Conservatory of Music. In 1967 he was drafted into “The Temptations” replacing lead singer David Ruffin. He led the group with such hits as, “I Can’t Get Next To You “, “Cloud Nine”, “Ball Of Confusion”, Papa Was A Rollin Stone”, and “Shakey Ground” among many others. “Cloud Nine” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone”, won Grammy Awards.
He piloted the group ” The Temptations Featuring Dennis Edwards” which included “Paul Williams Jr” (Son of original member Paul Williams) during the 90’s and continued touring in recent years. You may not remember Rod Temperton by name but, you surely will remember hit songs like “Always and Forever “, “Boogie Nights”, “Thriller”, “Rock with You”, “Off the Wall”, “Give me The Night” and “Baby Come to Me” just to name a few. Temperton was a great songwriter, record producer, and musician and singer.
IN THE BEGINNING
In 1974, Temperton answered an ad in a British weekly music newspaper known as “The Melody Maker” placed by Johnny Wilder Jr, lead singer of the group “Heat Wave” in which he was forming at the time. Wilder met him and liked his unique style, his funny sense of humor, and his friendly way. Temperton, joined the band as a full-time musician and wrote the lyrics to “Boogie Nights and “Always and “Forever” of which both were million dollar sellers in the United States. In 1978, Temperton decided to concentrate more on his songwriting and left the group . However, he continued to write for the Band!
ANOTHER BIG BREAK FOR ROD
In the late 70’s he attracted the attention of music producer Quincy Jones who ask his musical engineer Bruce Swedien to check out the Heat Wave album. Once Swedien heard it, he loved it. He loved the way Rod arranged and composed his tunes and songs to take on a Hip and soulful sound. Swedien also said Rod was “the most disciplined pop music composer I’ve ever met”. Rod was recruited in 1979 by Quincy Jones to work on Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall” album and wrote 3 songs for the album, including “Rock with You” which became the second US No. 1 single from the album. Then in 1982 “Temperton wrote three songs, including the title track, for Jackson’s “Thriller”, which became the biggest-selling album of all time . After Thriller, Temperton had other songwriting successes. He wrote for Donna Summer, The Manhattan Transfer, Herbie Hancock, LL Cool J and many others.
Temperton was nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar for “Miss Celie’s Blues,” which he co-wrote with Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie for The Color Purple in 1986. When the Movie “Running Scare came out later that year Rod Temperton wrote five new songs and composed the film’s score.
Unfortunately, Rod Temperton died September 2016 in London, but his death was not announced by his music publisher until the week of October 5, 2016. The world has lost another great musical genius but his songs will live on forever.
Otis Redding’s name is synonymous with soul music ! Redding left a legacy of recordings made during the four-year period from his first sessions with Stax and Volt Records in 1963 until his death in 1967. Ironically, he made a great impact on the R&B charts beginning with “Pain In My Heart” in 1964. The posthumous release of “Sittin’ On The Dock of the Bay”, a landmark song was recorded four days before Redding’s death. It spiked to #1 and stayed there for four weeks in early 1968. It marked new directions for the singer towards soul-folk-pop and R&B genre.Redding became known as the voice of soul music after he was discovered recording “These Arms of Mine”,the song quickly took off, rising to No. 20 on the R&B charts in 1963 and that’s when his career soared. Redding began recording for Stax Records, playing the guitar and arranging his own songs. He was known for his energy in the studio and, in 1965, recorded the album Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul in one day. He released “I’ve Been Loving Your Too Long” that same year, and “Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)” a year later. In 1967, Redding started his own label, Jotis Records, hoping to become more involved behind the scenes. As his career was taking off, he died in a plane crash on December 10, 1967. The song “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” became his first and only No. 1 hit in 1968. He was inducted into the Rock-In-Roll Hall of Fame March 11, 1989.
In addition to her new video, Janet Jackson has announced to an “ET” source that she is pregnant with her first baby. She announced her baby news after postponing her tour numerous times over the past year. Unfortunately, no reason was ever given, but now we may why. Since Ms.Jackson is reportedly having a baby, this was probably the reason. Ms. Jackson who turns 50 on May 16, announced last month that she will be postponing her tour to start a family with husband Wissam Al Mana. “We’re in the second leg of the tour and there actually has been a sudden change,” Jackson explained in a video posted to Twitter on April 6. “I thought it was important that you be the first to know.
